This mini zipper pouch is a fun and practical sewing project. It is quick and easy, perfect for beginners!

These little pouches are the right size for storing jewelry, earbuds, or other small essentials.

Best of all, they require only a small amount of fabric and can be customized in endless ways.

Follow this step-by-step guide to create your own mini zipper pouch!

Materials You’ll Need

▪ Fabric: Quilter’s cotton, denim, upcycled fabric, vinyl, faux leather, or scrappy fabric panels
▪ Interfacing: Lightweight interfacing or fusible fleece
▪ Zipper: Half of a zipper (one side) with a zipper pull, 8 ½ inches of zipper. (I love using “zippers-by-the-yard”
▪ D-Ring (optional): 1/2-inch D-ring with 2 inches of twill tape (or a fabric loop)
▪ Basic Sewing Supplies: Fabric scissors, rotary cutter, ruler, turning stick, sewing machine, zipper foot, iron, and ironing board
▪ Fabric Glue or Glue Stick (Optional): Helps with zipper placement

Cutting Out Mini Zipper Pouch

• Cut One Outer Fabric and One Lining Fabric: 3″ x 7 3/4″
• Interfacing: 2 1/2″ x 7 1/4″ (cut smaller to reduce bulk)

***If using thicker fabric like denim or corduroy, apply interfacing only to the lining fabric.

Step 1: Preparing Your Fabric

  • Press with an iron to adhere.
  • ****Embellish (Optional): If you want to add embroidery or an appliqué before assembling the pouch.

Use lightweight vinyl or faux leather instead of fabric. No lining is needed—attach the zipper directly to the vinyl.

  • Fold the zipper tape under and topstitch.
  • Fold the pouch in half and sew the sides and bottom. Easy!

Step 2:  D-Ring Application (optional)

  • Fold the twill tape in half, thread it through the D-ring, and baste it onto the fabric about 1/8″ from the edge.

Step 3: Zipper Application

  • Place the wrong side of the zipper facing up onto a piece of scrap paper.
  • Apply a small bead of glue onto the zipper taper.
  • Center the zipper onto the RIGHT SIDE of the LINING FABRIC, aligning the edges.
  • Press with an iron to set in place. (This is NOT permanent). This helps keep the zipper from shifting while sewing.
  • Now apply a bead of glue to the RIGHT SIDE OF THE ZIPPER TAPE, and place the RIGHT SIDE OF THE OUTER FABRIC onto the zipper.mini zipper pouch

Step 4: Attaching the Zipper Pull

Using a “zipper gadget” is nice, but don’t worry if you don’t have one.

  • Line up the ends of the zipper tape and thread the zipper ends into the zipper pull. (The Video tutorial is beneficial.)mini zipper pouch zipped
