Zipper pouches are one of those projects you can never have too many of—practical, cute, and surprisingly simple to sew.
But what if the pattern you’re using isn’t the size you want? Do you cross your fingers and hope for the best?
Nope—there’s an easy formula you can use to make your pouch exactly the size you need.
In this post, I’ll walk you through the simple math behind resizing a boxed zipper pouch.
Once you understand this, you can create pouches in any dimension—perfect for makeup bags, snack bags, or even overnight totes.
Why Adjust the Size of a Zipper Pouch?
- Maybe you saw a pouch at the store and wished it were just a bit taller.
- Or perhaps you need something smaller to fit earbuds, lip balm, or a little collection of sewing notions.
Instead of hunting down the “perfect” pattern, you can adjust what you already have.
By using this formula, you’ll be able to:
- Scale a zipper pouch up or down.
- Customize the depth and width for your needs.
- Always know how big to cut your panels and the dimensions of your box corners.
Step 1: Decide on Your Finished Size
The first step is determining how large you want your bag to be.
Tip: Use an existing pouch or gather the items you plan to store in the bag.
Set them side by side to get a sense of the dimensions you’ll need.
For example, I wanted a little overnight pouch to hold facial products. After measuring, I decided:
Length:: 5 ½ inches
Height: 5 inches
Width: 2 inches

Step 2: Use the Formula
I recommend downloading and printing this form so you can have it in front of you for visual reference.
Otherwise, I find it’s too easy to forget or get the measurements all mixed up, which can result in the wrong size panel being cut out. (Believe me, I have done it more than once!)
Every pouch starts as a flat rectangle of fabric.
To figure out the size of that rectangle (the panel), use this formula:
Horizontal Cut = Desired Length + Desired HEIGHT+ Seam Allowances x 2 (X 4 IF USING FRENCH SEAMS)
Vertical Cut = Desired WIDTH + Desired HEIGHT+ Seam Allowance x 2
For my example:
HORIZONTAL CUT = DESIRED LENGTH 8″ + DESIRED HEIGHT 8″ + 1″ (for ½” seam allowance) OR (2″ for French seams) = 16″
VERTICAL CUT = DESIRED WIDTH 4″ + DESIRED HEIGHT 8″ = 12″ + (seam allowance) 1″ = 13″
So, each panel would be 16 X 13.
You’ll cut:
2 panels of outer fabric
2 panels of lining
Stabilizer (optional, same size as panels)
Step 3: Figure Out the Zipper Length
Your zipper length = DESIRED WIDTH plus 1. I like to cut it at least 1/2 inch longer, just to be safe.
If you’re using zipper by the yard (which I love). Cut it to the desired length.
If you’re using a store-bought zipper, choose the closest size and trim if needed.
Step 4: The Secret to Box Corners
Box Cut = 1/2 Desired finished width subtract seam allowance.
So, for 3-inch-deep, divide by 2, (1 1/2 inches) SUBTRACT 1/2 SEAM ALLOWANCE.
The box cut would be 1 inch.

Tip: Always account for the seam allowance when marking your box corners!
Measure from the seam and the fold, NOT THE FABRIC EDGE.
Step 5: Mark and Cut Correctly
There are two primary methods for marking box corners:
- Before sewing the side seams, lay your panel flat and cut the square directly from the corners, ensuring you add the seam allowance.
- After sewing the side seams, mark the box cut and then cut. (Measure from the seam).
Either way works—it just depends on your pattern and personal preference.
This is an excellent tip: when you’re making that box corner, this little square ruler comes in real handy.
You can use a regular ruler, your own, or another type of template that you prefer.
By placing a piece of painter’s tape on the measurement of the cut, it will make it much easier on the eyes, and it will save you time from fidgeting around to find the lines again.
Step 6: Keep Notes
I highly recommend jotting down your measurements on a printable chart (I created one for you—download it free below!).
This way, you won’t forget your panel and zipper dimensions the next time you want to make the same size pouch.
Write down:
- Finished bag size
- Panel dimensions
- Number of pieces to cut (outer, lining, stabilizer)
- Zipper length
Final Thoughts
That’s it! With just a little math, you can make zipper pouches in any size you want.
Whether you prefer a tiny pouch for earbuds or a roomy overnight bag, this formula will take the guesswork out of resizing.
✨ Try making a few different sizes—you’ll be surprised how versatile these pouches can be.
My snack bags, for example, use a larger box corner so they stand upright, while some of my cosmetic bags use a much smaller corner for a sleeker look.
Happy sewing—and have fun making your perfect pouch!

Step 3: Figure Out the Zipper Length
Your zipper length = DESIRED WIDTH 5 1/2 + DESIRED HEIGHT 5 + 2 INCHES. I like to cut it at least 1/2 inch longer, just to be safe.
For this example:
5 ½” (width) + 5″ (height) + 2″ = 12 ½ to 13 inches.
If you’re using zipper by the yard (which I love). Cut it to the desired length.
If you’re using a store-bought zipper, choose the closest size and trim if needed.
