Smash Burger Tacos Instructions

Things come together fast on the grill, so ensure you have all the ingredients prepped and ready before you start.

Here are a few tips before you start making your tacos.

  • Always use flour tortillas, because they’re more absorbent and the meat sticks better.
  • Make sure you season your meat with salt and pepper.
  • Always use a flat top or a griddle. Use a burger press or a heavy spatula to smash the burgers.
  • Feel free to alter the cheese type or toppings to your liking.

Smash Burger Tacos Directions

Step 1: Roll the beef and get ready

Roll the beef into 2-ounce, slightly larger-than-golf-ball size balls.

Get all the toppings ready and prepare the sauce if you are making hamburger-style tacos.

Step 2: Fire up the griddle

Turn some of the burners on high heat (where you’ll cook the burger) and others on low (for a cooler spot to rest the tortilla side after you flip).

Step 3: Smash and toss

Place the beef balls onto the griddle, then quickly place a tortilla flat on top and smash it down with a press or spatula.

I like this cast iron burger press.

It works great for cooking bacon as well.

Make sure to press down until the burger is very thin. This allows the burger to cook quickly and get that crispness that is key in a “SMASHBURGER.”

Don’t worry if the burger comes to the edge of the tortilla or is a little bigger.

Cook the burger for ONLY 2-3 minutes, or until the meat is dark and crisp.

Then scrape and flip the taco to the cooler side of the griddle (make sure it’s the cooler side so the tortilla doesn’t get too crisp).

The patty on the left resembles a regular smash burger without the tortilla.

Step 4: Adding the toppings

Regular Tacos:

Add your toppings, fold them, and enjoy.

Fajita Style Tacos:

Add the grilled veggies and other toppings

Hamburger Style Tacos:

Once you’ve flipped the taco and it’s on the cooler side, add a slice of American cheese and let it melt. Add pickle and special sauce and serve immediately.

I like to prepare all the fixings and let each person make their own hands-on tacos.

Enjoy!
