Dandelion Removal: Use This Tool-Not Chemicals

(Updated May 2025)

I have sort of a love-hate relationship with dandelions. How about you?

When they get out of control and take over your lawn, it’s time to make some decisions.

Let’s go back to my love-hate relationship for just a moment. I am an herbalist and know of the many benefits of using dandelions as a remedy internally, nutritionally, and externally.

I use dandelion root tea for medicinal purposes and eat their leaves in my salads and smoothies.

However, when dandelions go to seed and spread their fluffy seeds around the yard, they can take over your lawn.

What Dandelions Say About Your Soil

Before you reach for a weeding tool, it’s worth understanding why dandelions are showing up in your lawn in the first place.

Believe it or not, these “weeds” are actually messengers.

Dandelions often thrive in compacted, low-calcium soil and areas with poor drainage.

Their deep taproots help loosen the soil and pull nutrients like calcium and iron up to the surface—nutrients that benefit other plants once the dandelion dies and decomposes.

So in a way, they’re nature’s little soil fixers.

If you leave the dandelion greens or roots on the lawn after removal—or toss them into your compost—they’ll return those minerals to the soil as they decompose.

It’s like free fertilizer, courtesy of Mother Nature. So while I’m all for removing dandelions without chemicals, let them give back a little before they go!

Most of you know that I try to avoid chemicals in my home and in my garden whenever possible.

Weed killer is NOT an option for me. I used to crawl around my lawn with a little digging tool, trying to pull out the dandelions, but not anymore!!!

Why should you avoid chemical weed killers?

This is a topic that needs its own post, but until then, here are a few links for you to check out.

Dandelion Removal at its best!

If you choose to remove the dandelions, we have found the most awesome tool ever!

This little gadget is one of the best purchases I have ever made for the garden.

The day we got it, I went to the lawn and started popping away. It was addictive. I couldn’t stop until one side of our yard was dandelion-free. (We have a ½ acre, so there is a lot of lawn.)

Once you pull it with this tool, they don’t grow back like they do when you use that little digging tool. It pulls out the WHOLE root.

We were so excited about this tool that I filmed my husband demoing it for you.

As much as we want a tidy lawn, dandelions have their place in nature.

They’re one of the first food sources for pollinators in early spring and are entirely edible, from root to flower.

So if you can let a few bloom in a corner of your yard, add the greens to your salad, or make some herbal remedies, your bees—and your soil—will thank you.

If you want a good tool for dandelion removal, this is your guy.

It is called the Fisker’s 4-Claw Weeder. It has a lifetime warranty and is well worth the money.

So, for all you lucky gardeners who DIY, this tool is a must to add to your garden shed!

Happy weed popping!
