How To Make Your Own Twist Ties / Unique Gift Wrapping Idea

diy twsit ties

In this post, I’m going to show you how to make your own DIY twist ties.

This is a fun, easy, and quick project. And a good way to give a little pop of color and unique look to a bag or a gift that you’re giving.

Twist Ties Materials & Supplies Needed

Washi tape comes in different widths. 1/4 inche – 1 inch. I find the 3/8 inch wide tape works the best.

However, you can use the 1 inch and fold in half like I show in method two.

You can make these any length of course, but I find 6 inches is a good length for most gifts.

twist ties 3/8 inch

Twist Ties Instruction (3/8 inch tape)

1- Cut the wire 6 inches.

2- Unroll the washi tape with the sticky side facing up.

3- Take the wire and apply it down the center of the tape. (It doesn’t have to be perfect, but you want it to be as centered as possible).

4- When you get to the end of the wire, fold the washi tape over onto itself, line up the edges. You might need to adjust the wire as you go.

5- Give it a good press with your fingers and cut off the ends. (Make sure you are not using your fabric scissors)!

Twist Ties Instruction (1/2 inch tape)

Washi tape comes in different sizes and if you use a wider tape, you’ll need to fold it a little differently.
Let me show you how to use the wider tapes.

1- Place the wire down the center of the tape just as before.

2- Fold it over, but instead of folding it over width wise, fold the same piece of tape lengthwise with the wire in the middle.

3- Clip it off any excess wire or tape.

Pretty cute and very simple.

Grab a cellophane bag, put your goodies inside, and wrap your twist tie around it.

There you have custom, adorable, unique twist ties for all your gift giving.

When you’re out and about, check out the different washi tapes in the craft stores, in the sewing stores, wherever they sell, crafting, and paper supplies.

You can also find them online.

Have fun making twist ties!

The Best Way To Clean the Bottom of an Iron

cleaning an iron
best way to clean an iron

It’s only a matter of time that your iron is going to accumulate a lot of gunk on the bottom plate.

In this post I’m going to show you the easiest way to get this stuff off your iron.

iron interfacing

You know those times when you’re applying fusible interfacing, wonder under, or heaven forbid you’ve melted a synthetic shirt or garment onto your iron.

You don’t want to get this gunk all over your quilting projects, your sewing projects, or an item of clothing.

There’s nothing more frustrating than finishing a nice, beautiful quilting block and you go to press it and you get a stain on it.

It’s really difficult to get these types of stains out.

So how do you get it off?

No worries. I’ve got you covered.
I’ve tried a bunch of different methods with all kinds of funky ingredients.

ITEMS & MATERIALS NEEDED

You can buy the name brand “Mr. Clean” or you can also a lot of generic magic eraser sponges.

Yes it’s that simple.

Let me just show you a close up of this iron.

I can only remember hitting the fusible interfacing a few times and I didn’t really think it made a mark at the time, but as the iron continues to heat up you’ll get these black brown marks on the iron and it also just eventually happens.

So, it’s good to clean it off so you’re not getting it on your projects.

HOW TO CLEAN THE BOTTOM OF THE IRON

The iron doesn’t have to be hot, in fact it’s better to clean it while it’s cold so you don’t burn your fingers from the steam.

magic eraser iron1- WET THE SPONGE WITH WATER AND WRING IT OUT

2- START RUBBING THE IRON WITH THE SPONGE.
You’ll be amazed how easy this stuff comes off!

Scrub the bottom and don’t forget the sides.

While your at it, use the eraser to clean up all the mineral deposits on the inside of iron station if you have one, like I do for this cordless model.

HOW TO CLEAN THE INSIDE OF THE IRON

All you’ll need is some distilled vinegar and some distilled water.

1- If there’s water already in the reservoir, EMPTY IT OUT.

iron cleaning old towel

2- Place an old towel on the ironing board or ironing mat.

3-Mix ¼ CUP WATER with ¾ CUP DISTILLED VINEGAR

4- Pour the solution into the water reservoir of the iron.

Put the lid back on. (DO NOT OVERFILL).

iron steam setting

5- Turn on the iron and set on “STEAM SETTING”.

6- Let the iron heat up for 3-5 MINUTES.

7- Start pressing the towel using the steam button to create a lot of steam.

Sometimes you’ll see gunk and rusty colored liquid come out.
Have you ever had that colored liquid come out on your shirt or project? It is so frustrating!

8- Use the spray function several times to get that the spray nozzle cleaned out.

8- Use the spray function several times to get that the spray nozzle cleaned out.

This will de-mineralize the inside of the iron, which is a good thing. especially if you haven’t been using distilled water.

When you don’t have any more stuff coming out your iron you can stop.

iron steam holes

CLEANING THE STEAM HOLES

9- Take a look on the bottom of the iron.

After you clean out the inside, there may be some gunk around the steam holes, and that shows you that there’s, also some grime and gunk on the inside.

This can wear out your iron, and taking these preventative measures will help the iron last a lot longer and save you a lot of grief.

10-Use the magic eraser to clean around the steam holes.

GETTING THE IRON READY FOR USE

1- Pour out the solution from the iron.

fillin iron with water

2- Fill the iron with DISTILLED WATER.

clementine wreath

Then take a piece of wire and poke out the circles you just cut.

Repeat until you have enough for a wreath.

It will take about 2 clementines for a 3 inch wreath.

STEP 3

Take the wire and start adding the clementine circles, poking the wire in the center of the circle.

Continue adding circles until you have enough for the size you want to make.

STEP 4

Bring the wire together at the top of the wreath and twist to close the circle. Take the wire cutters (DONT USE SCISSORS), clip off the excess wire.

STEP 5

You can leave them plain or tie a ribbon or jute to the wreath for hanging.

This little craft is great for the kids.

They’ll remember and associate crafts, Christmas and the aroma of clementine with fond memories.
